The Definitive Sherlock Holmes

The name Jeremy Brett has become synonymous with Sherlock Holmes.  When uttered, many of us automatically think of the 1980s series by Granada Television which is still very popular around the globe.  Similarly, when the name Sherlock Holmes is spoken, Jeremy Brett immediately springs to mind, along with other classics such as Basil Rathbone and Peter Cushing, not to mention current stars such as Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey Jr.

When playing Holmes, Jeremy insisted that the scrips remained as faithful to the original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories as possible.  It was this insistence, coupled with all of the tremendous acting skills that Jeremy brought together, which helped to create a dark, witty, eccentric, and sensitive character which gained him international stardom and transformed him  into the Definitive Sherlock Holmes.  Jeremy Brett’s portrayal of the legendary detective, alongside other well-known and talented actors such as David Burke, Edward Hardwicke, Eric Porter, Joss Ackland, Natasha Richardson, Richard Wilson, and Robert Hardy, to mention but a few, went hand in hand with marvelous productions by some of television’s best-known directors and producers.  The impact was such, that the Granada Television Sherlock Holmes stories, which ran from 1984 to 1994 respectively, set a strong benchmark for all future portrayals and productions of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous consulting detective.
